Market summary

2023-2024

Unstable weather and delays in harvesting disrupted the start of the campaign, while rising production costs and high inflation put pressure on growers.

Reduction in the number of varieties grown, leading to lower availability and significant losses (11,000 hectares, 650,000 tonnes). This has boosted demand, particularly from the domestic market (supermarkets and wholesalers), due to limited supply and high prices.

Despite the challenges, high tonnages and good yields enabled us to partially meet increased demand.

Prices continue to rise, with demand mainly driven by sectors other than supermarkets, which are showing an interest in specific varieties. At the same time, production costs are rising, exerting pressure that makes negotiations and promotions more difficult to implement. At the end of the campaign, low stocks led to recourse to imports, especially for french fries and white firm-fleshed potatoes.

Global exports: Over the period 2023-2024, France exported 2.556 million tons of potatoes internationally.

In short, this campaign was marked by production challenges, high costs and increased demand. This pushed the market into complex adjustments between the various distribution, processing and export segments.
